The relatively low alcohol Chrysanthemum was created around 1916 by Hugo Ensslin, a German bartender in New York City. While Ensslin is relatively obscure, his self-published but influential Recipes For Mixed Drinks contained the first publication of several classic cocktails, such as the Aviation.
