Even though Americans could legally consume Campari cocktails in the US
during prohibition (it was classified by the government as a medicinal
product), this drink was popular amongst tourists from the United States in
Italy and was dubbed the "Americano".
The recipe itself was created long before that at Gaspare's Campari Bar in
Turin in 1861.
