WWI Fruit Cake

World War I was fought on the ground and in the trenches, which is probably the last place anyone would want to be during the holidays. So families would send trench cakes like this fruit cake to their loved ones. These rugged, dense cakes could withstand the long journey from home to the front lines. You can imagine the joy it would bring to a soldier who has had nothing but rations for months. A wonderful taste from home during the holidays.
